By Jordan Gerdes

I followed Kate Davies-Speak on Twitter sometime in the last few years and was blown away, not just by her work in films like Escape From Cannibal Farm, but by her constant interaction with her followers. Her participation in #Showreelshareday in connecting actors and actresses with agents and casting professionals through engagements, retweets, and oferring amazing advice is unlike anything I had seen before. If you are trying to get into the film industry, this is one follow you can’t afford to miss. I knew that I had to have her come on and talk about her career and process. So please, enjoy the amazing Kate Davies-Speak!

FoF: First and foremost, tell us about yourself.

I am an actress and fitness coach based in Bristol, England. I have been acting professionally for 18 years and mainly work in film and TV. I spent 3 years touring around Europe with travelling theatre companies but now I do a lot of work in independent film. I enjoy playing action roles, enjoy horror/thriller and aspire to do work in crime drama- i’m A big fan of gritty, British TV series. When I am not acting I am passionate about fitness, illustration, casting and playing video games. I also occasionally do some cosplay work but only ever as Lara Croft, the different versions of her, I may try Claire Redfield next year…

FoF: What do you do? And why do you like it?

I generally shoot roughly 4 feature films a year but I dip in and out of any acting opportunities that come along, motion capture, voice over, commercials and live events are just a few examples. I also try to find ways to get more opportunities fir all actors but setting up events on social media that everyone can take advantage of to get their work seen. I enjoy my work because it’s varied, I get to work with lots of great people, build wonderful friendships and travel about. I also love to be challenged.:

FoF: Explain a little bit of your process? Where do you find your inspiration?

I mainly strive to be as natural as possible, especially with screen acting, this is achieved by making sure I know the script inside out and back to front. Then I have time to experiment and play with my co-actors. Acting is all about reacting, listening and genuinely observing and absorbing what the other actors are conveying to me. I’m inspired by s many great actors but one of my favourites is Sarah Lancashire she’s one of the most natural actresses I have ever seen.

FoF: What drew you to horror in the first place?

I grew up watching horror films. I love to get scared, within reason! I also adore scary video games. The love of horror stayed with me and I suppose the opportunity to work in horror stemmed from that. I do like to bring believable characters, plausible acting to a role even within the horror setting. A good horror should have characters that you care about so I treat it like a drama but with messed up situations happening to them.

FoF: What is your favorite horror work? (Movie, Show, Art, Book, whatever you want)

My absolutely favourite is the video game ‘Resident Evil 2’ it is one of the best horror experiences i’ve Known. I also love John Carpenter films, Stephen King books, it’s so hard to pick a favourite. I have such a guilty obsession with the movie ‘Scream’ as well.

FoF: What has been your favorite thing you have gotten to work on doing this?

I have enjoyed nearly every project but the ones that I will treasure forever would be; ‘The Barge People’, ‘Horizon’(series), ‘The Mine’ (the the experience and challenges, ‘Escape from Cannibal Farm’ and working with Emmy Award winning ‘Ember Films’ on ‘Refugium’.

FoF: What role do you think your specific style of art/work plays in the community overall?

I suppose I hope that people, particularly young women, will be inspired by the roles that I play, strong women, independent and those that fight for what they believe in.

FoF: Anything you are working on that you want to highlight?

I hope that people will check out The Barge People’ when it’s released this year and that they find the time to watch both seasons of ‘Horizon’ which is free to watch.

FoF: Anything else you’d like to say/add?

Thanks for taking an interest, hope everyone gets to enjoy some of what I enjoy doing.

A huge thank you to Kate for wanting to do this interview and for all she does for the acting community on Twitter.
