31 Nights of Fright: An Interview with Gargantucast!

By Jordan Gerdes

That’s right! Our Creator series is back for Season 2, and instead of Freaky Friday this time, we are doing 31 Nights of Fright! Every day in October, I aim to have a new creator to share with you, new articles, new content, and tons of spooky fun!

We are going big this month, so who better to start off with than the host of a Kaiju/Giant Monster centered podcast!

It is my pleasure to introduce you all to Chris McDonald and his podcast, GARGANTUCAST!

FOF: First and foremost, tell us about yourself.

Chris: My name is Chris McDonald. I am 25 years old and I am the primary host the Kaiju and Monster movie focused podcast Gargantucast, which is part of the Something Ghoulish network.

FOF: What do you do? And why do you like it?

Chris: As said before I am the primary host of Gargantucast where me, my co-host Cole Grisson, and various guests discuss Kaiju cinema and it’s impact on genre filmmaking. I enjoy it as it allows me to express my love for a genre I adore very much in a creative way.

FOF: Explain a little bit of your process? Where do you find your inspiration?

Chris: Well first me and my co-hosts watch/read whatever Kaiju related media we are going to discuss for that upcoming planned episode. Afterwards I do research on the episode’s topic and form questions to ask and discuss with my co-hosts throughout the recording session. From there we record the episode and it is then edited by my Editor/Producer Anthony of Something Ghoulish.

FOF: What drew you to horror in the first place?

Chris: Well ever since I was younger I have always enjoyed monster movies. I remember watching early Godzilla films or classic Universal Monsters movies on either TNT’s Monstervision or AMC’s Halloween horror blocks. As I grow older I went to find more darker works which led me to my first horror movie memory by buying a VHS copy of Ridley Scott’s Alien. I was both scared yet fascinated and that fascination led me to find more horror films at my local Blockbuster. My step-mother also led me to my love of horror as I remember joining her to watch Freddy vs. Jason on opening weekend, cementing my love of the horror genre.

FOF: What is your favorite horror work? (Movie, Show, Art, Book, whatever you want)

Chris: When it comes to monster films my all time favorite is the original 1954 Godzilla as it represent the best the genre can truly be. In terms of pure horror media, when it comes to film my favorite is definitely Ridley Scott’s Alien. TV Series wise I have to go with Tales from the Crypt! Favorite horror book is Jeremy Robinson’s Project Nemesis. And lastly my favorite horror video game is Resident Evil 4!

FOF: What has been your favorite thing you have gotten to work on doing this?

Chris: On of my favorite things I worked on is my various collaborations with other horror content creators such as Straight Chilling Podcast.

FOF: What role do you think your specific style of art plays in the community overall?

Chris: I feel it allows me to Express my love of Monster Movies with other like minded people as we give our own thoughts in hopes of showing people how meaningful this genre represents to so many.

FOF: Anything you are working on that you want to highlight? (Commissions, flash sales, new project?)

Chris: Well after a bit of a hiatus Gargantucast has relaunched itself under the Something Ghoulish network so we can bring out bigger and better content. I am also working on a secret personal project that I will unveil when the time is right.

FOF: If you could do anything with any horror franchise, what would it be?

Chris: One of my other passions is writing so I would love to work on a horror comic in either an ongoing format or a miniseries.

FOF: Anything else you’d like to say?

Chris: If any of your readers want to give our show a listen, they can find us on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Stitcher, and Google Play!

I want to thank Chris and the Gargantucast team for jumping on board so quick! If you want to keep up with Gargantucast, you can find them on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

They can also be found at their site and check out their Patreon and grab a tshirt!!

They are also the first season 2 addition to our running Podcast Directory, in case you ignore everything above.
